What is Osteopathy?

untitled.JPGOsteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment based on established medical and scientific understanding of pain and disease.

Treatment primarily focuses on the musculoskeletal system (joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons) and is guided by detailed understanding of human anatomy, physiology and pathology. This allows the osteopath to treat you in a 'hands on' way that is non invasive, safe and drug-free. Diagnosis is underpinned by thorough clinical examination.

Who can benefit from Osteopathy?

Everyone can benefit. From children and teenagers who suffer strains with poor posture when playing computer games or carrying heavy school bags, through to the elderly who have reduced mobility through worn joints.

What happens when you visit an Osteopath?

Find an osteopath Default Pic 2When you see your Osteopath for the first time, your medical case history will be taken and you will be given a full examination. You may have to remove some of your clothing before being asked to perform a series of movements. The Osteopath will use their highly developed sense of touch to identify any points of weakness or excessive strains throughout your body. If blood tests or scans are required, or if your condition is not suitable for Osteopathic treatment, you will then be referred back to your G.P.

What does treatment involve...

Spacer - no image here by default...and how much will you need?

This will depend on the nature and duration of your condition and on individual factors such as age and physique. Many patients will feel an improvement after one or two treatments; others may need a series of treatments to benefit.

Treatment can be very gentle, using soft tissue stretching, or involve the use of deeper, stronger techniques. Manipulation techniques ('clicking joints') are only used when appropriate and with your consent.

Remedial exercises and self help advice will be given as necessary to minimize and control your symptoms between treatments.

How do you know you are in safe hands?

In 1993, Osteopathy became the first major complimentary healthcare profession to be accorded regulation under the Osteopaths Act. This means that all Osteopaths have to be registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) and can only do so after having qualified through an accredited training course at an approved college.
